While you can get a decent workout outside, there are some exercises that you really need machines and weights to do properly. A gym gives you access to this equipment, which enables you to work out more muscles. Being able to introduce more variety to your workouts may make it easier for you to stick to an exercise routine. You may get fit faster, or improve your fitness to a greater degree because you have the right equipment to do it.

You can meet other people.

When you go to the gym, you will be surrounded by other people who are also working out. This can be a great way to make friends. Talk to the person next to you on the treadmill, or strike up a conversation with the person using a machine after you. Having friends at the gym will help motivate you to keep going.

Most gyms have classes.

At most gyms, you can take classes in yoga, Pilates, aerobics, and more. You don't have to take a class every time you visit the gym, but it can be nice to have the option. It will add some variety, give you an easy way to learn new exercise techniques, and make working out more fun.

If you really want to get fit, consider joining a gym. Is doing so necessary? Not exactly, but it certainly is beneficial.
